BP Oil Spill Hurting Some, But Not All, Gulf Coast Beaches | CheapOair

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Alabama: According to the Alabama Gulf Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau, Orange Beach and the Gulf Shores have seen a lot of oil come ashore from the BP oil spill. It has been advised that while it is safe to bathe in the sun and walk or play in the sand, people should avoid swimming in the beach water. CNN reports that “the Alabama Department of Public Health has issued an advisory against swimming in waters off Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan, and in bay waters close to Fort Morgan, Bayou St. John, Terry Cove, Cotton Bayou and Old River.” That is in addition to last week’s advisory by department requesting people avoid swimming in Dauphin Island and the Mississippi Sound.

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

FORT MORGAN, Alabama – In this report, News 5 took an ultra light flight about a mile off of Fort Morgan and took pictures of the ships of opportunity attempting to corral oil. It seemed from a distance that the boats were hard at work but when you take a closer look, you can see they are not having much success. By clicking on the arrow accompanying this report, you’ll also see evidence of the limitations of small boats trying to fight an ocean of oil.

Galveston officials worried about BP spill | Deepwater Horizon | Chron.com – Houston Chronicle

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Local officials ignored
State and federal officials doubted that the same problems that bedeviled Orange Beach would arise in Texas, but said no amount of planning can prepare for every eventuality.

The Orange Beach oil spill response plan fell apart when the oil slick arrived in June from BP’s Macondo well, where oil is still gushing from a wellhead that blew out April 20 and destroyed the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform.

Orange Beach Mayor Tony Kennon said BP and the Coast Guard had five weeks to get ready as the oil headed toward his city. “The whole process got started with BP coming to town and telling us to get out of the way, and the big boys were going to take care of it,” Kennon said.

BP ignored local officials despite their knowledge of the geography and the water conditions, contributing to the resulting disaster for Orange Beach, he said.

“We had contractors all over the place and a mother ship in Mobile 100 miles away trying to micromanage,” Kennon said, referring to the oil spill incident command post.

Oil spill: Biden visits Pensacola today | pnj.com | Pensacola News Journal

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Vice President Joe Biden will visit Pensacola today while touring Gulf Coast oil spill response efforts.

Biden will survey cleanup operations, visit with Gulf Coast residents and meet with area officials.

He will visit a Unified Command operation in New Orleans before heading to Pensacola, where he is scheduled to speak to the media at Pensacola Naval Air Station.

OBA Editor’s Note: Biden is not scheduled to stop in Mississippi or Alabama. Is this be because he doesn’t want to see the Obama administration’s biggest blunder of failing to protect the (300 yard wide) Perdido Pass, which in turn would have protected hundreds of miles of backbay shoreline, estuaries, wetlands and marine breeding areas?

Locals had the plan to protect this pass weeks before the oil reached our shores, but BP and the Federal Government wouldn’t approve the Perdido Pass Protection boom (aka P3). It wasn’t until Mayor Kennon got the attention of the national media that this plan was allowed to go forward.

Now, three weeks later the P3 project will be fully functional in a day or two. All indications are that it will keep most of the oil coming through Perdido Pass out of our inland waters and off of hundreds of miles of shoreline.

More Oil for Orange Beach – Orange Beach Alabama

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

ORANGE BEACH, Alabama – The oil assault on Romar Beach and other parts of Orange Beach that started over the weekend, continued Monday. With seas at two to four feet, waves washed higher onto the sand giving some indication of what an oily storm surge might do.
“It’s going to be a non-stop thing all summer long,” says Orange Beach Mayor Tony Kennon. “All we can do is let people know the truth. Oil is going to be on the beaches most of the time. Beaches are clean and pretty but for that ten to fifteen feet at the surf it’s going to be oily. It’s going to be dirty.”
