As the Examiner has been reporting for over a year, the rate of dolphin deaths has been staggering. While WWLTV reports that there have been 630 in the course of two years — actually slightly preceding the Gulf oil catastrophe of April, 2010 — these do not fully account for the countless, unreported or underreported mammals who've perished.

MOBILE, Alabama – The next public meeting on this is Tuesday night from 6pm to 9pm in Gulf Shores at the Kaiser Realty Meeting Facility.  This is a look at how officials plan on spending $57 million dollars on mostly environmental restoration projects.  In Alabama there are two projects planned so far.  One concerns dune restoration in Baldwin County and the other will build marshland around Portersville Bay in Mobile County.

FAIRHOPE, Alabama—The familiar sight of Brown Pelicans skimming above the waters of Mobile Bay and perching on piers along the Gulf Coast was not always a given.

“Pesticides like DDT threatened the Brown Pelicans future in the Southeast in the early 1970s,” Dr. John Borom, director of the Fairhope campus of Faulkner State Community College, said of the pesticide that may have damaged the species’ ability to reproduce and was banned in 1972. “Since then the population has increased.”

GULF SHORES, Alabama — Wind and water constantly change the 18 to 20 miles of sand dunes on Baldwin County beaches.

“The dunes are our first line of defense against any kind of storms any kind of wave action.” According to Brandan Franklin with the city of Gulf Shores, they took a beating during the BP oil spill. “With the number of access points a lot of our clean up crews have had to use a lot of our dunes have been destroyed.”
