GULF SHORES, Alabama — Wind and water constantly change the 18 to 20 miles of sand dunes on Baldwin County beaches.

“The dunes are our first line of defense against any kind of storms any kind of wave action.” According to Brandan Franklin with the city of Gulf Shores, they took a beating during the BP oil spill. “With the number of access points a lot of our clean up crews have had to use a lot of our dunes have been destroyed.”

SPANISH FORT, Alabama  – The method of engineering that is being considered as a solution to stormwater issues on upper Joe’s Branch is not faultless or time-tested, according to two people who have implemented “regenerative step-pool storm conveyance” (SPSC) as a watershed management technique in Maryland. Yet, in the struggle to control runoff in an area that has experienced rapid development on top of highly erodible soil, the public works department of Anne Arundel County believes SPSC is both cost effective and reliable.

FAIRHOPE, Alabama—The “before” photograph shows a typical two-lane road in Orange Beach, but an “after” artistic rendering shows that same location with a roundabout, sidewalks, bike lanes, covered bus stop and scenic landscaping.

That South Alabama roadway comparison is featured on the home page of the Walkable and Livable Communities Institute of Port Townsend, Wash., whose director, Dan Burden, will be in Fairhope tomorrow for a discussion of “complete streets” policies, such as those passed by Orange Beach, Daphne and Fairhope in Baldwin County, and Mount Vernon, Chickasaw and Mobile across the bay.

Longleaf Pine Restoration Grant Available to Landowners

The Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division (WFF) of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) is currently accepting applications through its Landowner Incentive Program (LIP) to continue longleaf pine restoration efforts in Alabama. The grant was awarded through a partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), and will be made available to qualifying landowners for longleaf pine restoration on private lands.

SPANISH FORT – Roberta Swann, director of the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program, said the group has received verbal confirmation that $770,000 in grants has been allocated for the Joe’s Branch rehabilitation project. As a part of the greater D’Olive Watershed Management Plan (WMP), the project seeks to stabilize a large head-cut on upper Joe’s Branch that has the potential to threaten U.S. Highway 31 in a heavy rain event.
