PERDIDO BAY — Optimist Club of Perdido Bay (OCPB) left the Alabama-Louisiana-Mississippi District Convention in Orange Beach with several prodigious awards including First Place for “Grits and Bits”, the club’s monthly newsletter. In addition, they brought home a Community Service Award, Friends of Youth Award, and Honor Club.

GULF SHORES, Alabama — Beach-lovers dubbed them the Sunny Bear Dips, as thousands plunged into the brisk Gulf waters to celebrate the first day of 2012 in Gulf Shores and Perdido Key, Fla., today.

Eat, drink, get wet and enjoy the live music, was the rule at the Flora-Bama Lounge, Package & Oyster Bar’s 27th annual Polar Bear Dip, which drew several thousand to the popular beachfront club.

Nick Shantazio had a cruddy 2011.

“I don’t even want to talk about it,” said Shantazio, 28, shooing away further inquiries with a swipe of the hand. “It was real bad.”

So he drank heavily on New Year’s Eve in his hometown of Mobile, woke up late Sunday and donned a woman’s red one-piece bathing suit and a blond wig, and headed to Perdido Key to jump in the cold winter water.

The fire crew assigned to Perdido Key Fire Station 19 and Community Center has moved to Innerarity Point Station 8 for 18 months.

Escambia County officials said in a news release the relocation is necessary because the Perdido Key fire station and community center are being rebuilt.

I have, and will always, check next to “beach.” Nothing against the mountains; I’m sure they’re lovely and that snow and all of the activities that go with them are wonderful, but I’ll take the beach and a body of water any day.

PERDIDO KEY  -  A new fire station and Visitors Information Center will soon be built in Perdido Key. Commissioners narrowly approved a bid last night.

Rod Cooke Construction had the low bid $4.62 million.

The Gulf Islands National Seashore is taking advantage of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredging project in Pensacola Pass to reclaim some of its sand for Perdido Key.

Sand along the barrier islands naturally drifts with longshore currents from east to west, seashore Superintendent Dan Brown said.

PERDIDO KEY, Florida –An injured shark got to close for comfort in Perdido Key. The bull shark was seen Wednesday swimming near shore covering about a 400 foot area.A person at the beach captured video of the shark on his iPhone.  The bull shark is about 5 to 6 feet long and has a gash around its head.
